3D Printing Gives This Arthritis Patient Her Life Back

A New York-based healthcare company has developed a new 3D-printed knee brace that has proven to be a game-changer for one patient suffering from arthritis.

Called the Deka Knee Brace, the device is the result of a partnership between Deka Medical and 3D Systems. According to the companies, the new brace is the first 3D-printed device to be cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in knee replacement surgery.

The Deka Knee Brace is designed to provide additional support for patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery, which can often result in weakened muscles and ligaments. The device is made of a tough, flexible material called polylactic acid, which is designed to provide strength and durability.

The knee brace was developed using 3D printing technology, which allowed the device to be customized to fit the patient’s individual anatomy. The brace also features a hinge that is designed to help support movement and relieve pain. The hinge can be repositioned 2.5 times without losing strength.

According to Deka Medical, the device has been shown to speed up recovery and reduce the need for opioid pain medication. The knee brace is also said to minimize complications such as swelling, bruising and pain, and it is expected to reduce the need for physical therapy by 50 percent.

The Deka Knee Brace recently won the 3D Systems Award for World’s First 3D-Printed Medical Device Cleared by the FDA at the 2018 3D Printing Industry Awards.
